Sakana del Peru S.A., a subsidiary in the Republic of Peru of Taiyo A&F Co., Ltd., which is a group company of Umios Corporation, obtained Peru's first MSC Fishery Certification on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, after its North Peru Pacific eel pot fishery was recognized as meeting the MSC Fisheries Standard — the global benchmark for sustainable fishing. The certification covers seven of the company's fishing vessels.
This North Peru Pacific eel pot fishery has been working on numerous improvements since 2021, including deepening scientific knowledge of fish stocks, strengthening monitoring systems, and introducing more effective management measures. In 2023, it joined the "Improvement Program for Achieving MSC Fishery Certification" and steadily advanced efforts to comply with the MSC Fisheries Standard, including the introduction of an onboard observer program and the establishment of restrictions on minimum catch sizes and fishing gear. The company also implemented a robust traceability system through electronic reporting of catches and landings, ensuring transparency throughout the entire chain from catch through processing to export.
These efforts have been driven by Sakana del Peru S.A. and fellow industry member Perupez, working in close collaboration with scientists, the Peruvian Marine Research Institute (IMARPE), and the Ministry of Production of Peru (PRODUCE).
MSC Fishery Certification is a certification awarded to fisheries that meet the rigorous standards of the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), an international non-profit organization that manages and promotes a certification system for sustainable fisheries that give consideration to the protection of the natural environment and marine resources.
